Coffee Farming
Lots of love and care are required to have a coffee farm. It’s a year-round job, but farms in El Salvador typically plant new trees in April.
Something that makes coffee in El Salvador unique is that it is grown in the shade. The country has a lot of storms throughout the year so having tall trees near the coffee helps protect it from the rain.
Another fun fact is how the coffee matures. The tree will flower at different times because of the rain. This is why when it’s time to harvest, part of the tree will have red/purple berries while other parts of the tree will still have green berries. This is normal and means the farmer has to harvest the tree several times.
Once all the berries on the coffee tree are ripe, it’s time to harvest!
The harvest depends on the winter El Salvador had and the altitude of the farm. Lower-altitude farms will harvest from late October to December, while higher-altitude farms will harvest from December to February.
After all the berries are harvested they are weighed, washed, dried, and later roasted.
