Growing Coffee Trees In El Salvador
All good things start with a seed, and in El Salvador, those seeds are usually planted in Ahuachapan. To start, the farmer has to prep the soil and plant a coffee seed which is found inside the coffee berry.
In El Salvador, they start this process in December. Fun fact: farmers grow the coffee in the shade to make sure it doesn’t get too much sun and protect the trees from rain. Once the plant has a concha, which means the first two leaves, the farmer can plant the coffee tree in a bag and let it grow.
In March and April, the farmer will start classifying the trees, organizing them to see which trees are well developed, which trees need more maturing, etc. After this, the farmer will start nurturing the trees that need extra love so they can flourish.
In El Salvador, most trees have branches and are ready to be planted in April. That is when the farmer will hand the tree off to a coffee farm where it will be planted in its permanent home.
